SocialFi: The end of the hijacked ‘Social Graph’
Over the last decade, we have accepted an unfair deal: we hand over our intellectual property, our contacts and our time in exchange for a free interface. In Web2, if a platform decides to change the rules or close your account, you lose years of community building. SocialFi (Social Finance) is not a new social network; it is the migration of social capital to the user’s balance sheet.

The Social Graph as an On-chain Asset
The big technical difference with SocialFi lies in the portability of the social graph. In protocols such as Lens Protocol or Farcaster, your network of connections does not live on a server belonging to a company in California, but in a smart contract.
SOVEREIGN IDENTITY: Your profile is an NFT or a record in a decentralised database.
INTEROPERABILITY: If you don’t like the interface (the ‘front-end’) of an application, you simply connect your wallet to another one. Your followers, your messages and your content history move with you. There are no ‘garden walls’.
Programmatic Monetisation without Intermediaries
The current advertising model is inefficient for the average creator. SocialFi introduces native monetisation through micro-payments and governance tokens.
PROOF OF PARTICIPATION: Users are rewarded for the value they bring to the network (content curation, moderation, or real engagement), not by black-box algorithms that favour clickbait.
SOCIAL CAPITAL AS COLLATERAL: We are seeing experiments where the value of a social profile can serve as collateral for loans or access to presales, transforming reputation into a liquid financial asset.
‘In Web2, you are the product. In SocialFi, the product is the protocol, and you are the shareholder.’
Resistance to Censorship and Community Moderation
One of the biggest challenges today is who decides what is ‘true’ or what is ‘appropriate.’ SocialFi shifts this responsibility from a corporate board of directors to the community through DAOs (Decentralised Autonomous Organisations).
CONTENT GOVERNANCE: Token holders decide the rules of moderation.
DECENTRALISED STORAGE: By using networks such as IPFS or Arweave, content is permanent and cannot be deleted by a single centralised entity.
The Scalability Challenge: The Current State
Not everything is perfect. SocialFi faces the social media ‘trilemma’: Privacy, Scalability, and User Experience (UX). Moving millions of interactions per second on-chain is expensive, which is why Layer 2 (L2) solutions and AppChains are the real stars of this infrastructure.
CONCLUSION
SocialFi is not about creating ‘the new Twitter,’ but about dismantling the monopoly on human attention. It is the transition from a platform economy to a protocol economy, where value flows directly between creators and consumers, without algorithmic tolls.
